The result is an unpredictable format that's unlike anything else on TV. To keep the narrative fresh and spontaneous, Curb Your Enthusiasm is shot without a script the cast is given scene outlines and often improvise lines as they go. Like George Costanza in Seinfeld, the protagonist of Curb Your Enthusiasm has a knack for getting himself into uncomfortable situations that end up alienating him from peers and acquaintances. Having evolved from the 1999 HBO special Larry David: Curb Your Enthusiasm, this series proves how seemingly trivial details of one's day-to-day life-a trip to the movies, a phone call, a visit from some trick-or-treaters-can precipitate a "Murphy's Law" chain of misfortune to hilarious effect. The series blurs the lines between reality and fiction, as David (playing himself) and a cast of real and fictional characters are followed around Los Angeles by a ubiquitous camera that chronicles the private, often banal world of a (relatively) public man. With cast regulars Jeff Garlin and Cheryl Hines reprising their roles, the series features appearances by guest celebrities playing themselves or character roles. Lightroom has some, but when you need to make an image exactly as it ought to be, nothing beats Photoshop's adjustment layers. Photoshop is also unique in having extraordinarily flexible adjustment layers and masks for localized image adjustments. I use Photoshop because it has a great toolbox of basic image crunching functions that I need for taking images of one format (like a digital camera shot) and making a different kind of file from them, like a JPG optimized for display on the Internet. I do all the resizing, sharpening and branding in Actions, meaning it takes just one click for everything to be done exactly as I programmed it.Įvery time I make a 600-pixel wide branded image for this website, it's just one click. I shade, burn, dodge and spot by hand, if I have to. I use Photoshop sometimes to do some slight adjustments, like burning and dodging using adjustment layer masks, but mostly all I do is spot (remove dirt and blemishes ), crop to the right shape, resize, and add my © notice in exactly the right font and shading as I demand. I use Photoshop because it's the best tool on Earth for doing what I do with images. Like most people, I work in Photoshop all day and night, but use less than 1% of what's in it. Once the shutter closes, they are 99% done. It's also for creative graphic artists, who create images for the very first time inside of Photoshop. Photoshop is for the precise optimization and tweaking of images. (The other hours are spent in Dreamweaver, but Dreamweaver CS4 is so buggy that I use Dreamweaver CS2 instead.) It's so bad that I've even had dreams where my entire perception of life is nothing more than mousing around in Photoshop, which sadly, is pretty much how my day-to-day life goes. What I will do is give you my opinions of how well this latest CS4 version of Photoshop works for me and what I do, and most importantly, why it's worth upgrading to it when you can do the same things on any other version of Photoshop. Therefore I don't dare call this a review of Photoshop. Now, with way over 20 years of continuous development inside it by hundreds of people, Photoshop is such a broad and deep tool for so many completely different people and applications, no one man is worthy of writing what I'd call a review. With Photoshop, the best I can hope to do is to learn how to do what I need it to do, and ignore the rest. While I confidently churn out reviews on even the most complex digital and film cameras, even the most complex digital camera is trivial compared to the awesome and innumerable powers of Photoshop.Įven back in the 1990s with Photoshop 4, it could do far more than I could ever master in my lifetime. I've been working in digital imaging full-time for a living since the 1980s, long before Photoshop was ever released, but I'll admit that I'm humbled by Photoshop. I've been shooting for more than 40 years, so I have this down. Give me one for a few hours to shoot in various conditions, and I can spit out a review that is meaningful to most kinds of photographers for use under most likely conditions. It was the first signal to the world that not all was well in the Carter family. Later, Jay brings up the 2014 Met Gala incident, when Beyoncé’s sister Solange got physical with him in an elevator, an altercation that was caught on security camera. “He gave you 20 minutes on stage, fuck was he thinkin’?” “You gave him 20 million without thinkin’,” Jay says, supposedly confirming a rumor that he lent West a large sum of money a few years ago. He mentions the childhood incident in which he shot his own brother, memorialized in the 1997 track “You Must Love Me” and the 1999 stabbing of producer Lance “Un” Rivera that became his biggest scrape with the law as a celebrity.īut there are two particular headline-grabbing incidents that get the most intriguing references on “Kill Jay Z.” “You dropped outta school, you lost your principles,” he says as he begins subliminally, but sharply, addressing Kanye “The College Dropout” West, who called out Jay during a concert last November. In one long, uninterrupted verse, Jay-Z zeroes in on several of the most significant conflicts in his life. “Kill Jay Z” samples the Alan Parson Project’s 1977 soft-rock hit “Don’t Let It Show,” with Dave Townsend’s skipping, stuttering voice repeating the words “They say I’m to blame” throughout the track. “It’s about killing off the ego, so we can have this conversation in a place of vulnerability and honesty.” Is he killing off the version of himself from the last four years, the one that inspired the songs of betrayal on Beyonce’s Lemonade? “It’s really about the ego,” Jay said in an iHeart Radio interview that accompanied the premiere of the album. Here’s a track-by-track breakdown of 4:44.Īhead of the release of 4:44, hyphen fans everywhere celebrated the return of “Jay-Z,” the stylization that Sean Carter used from roughly 1997 until 2013, when he dropped the punctuation to become simply “Jay Z.” The fact that the first new song by the renewed Jay-Z is titled “Kill Jay Z,” with no hyphen, is either a typographical error or pointed subtext. On the album, executive produced by No I.D., Jay-Z takes a pro-black stance, addresses intergenerational conflicts in hip-hop and talks about marital troubles after many had interpreted lines for his wife Beyoncé’s 2016 album Lemonade as alluding to infidelity. Veteran MC Jay-Z dropped his 13th album last night via Tidal, the streaming service he owns.
